Building a bench

Insight

The objective

Our client has a strong track record of innovation and customer focus. Technical expertise is highly valued and underpinned with an entrepreneurial start up culture. Now approaching an exciting period of growth and change, they wanted to understand their leadership strength and depth and their readiness for the increasing complex demands being placed upon them.

Lodestar were asked to design a positive developmental experience for senior leaders, ensuring that they felt supported and valued and emerged with targeted development plans.

The solution

We recommend looking through four lenses to understand the potential of leaders. We believe today’s environment requires leaders who can make meaning of their context, determine what needs to be done, have the motivation and creativity to get it done, and the ability to take others with them – put simply, leaders need to contextualise, prioritise, energise and deliver.

Our approach

It was very important to the client that this was a positive experience for those participating and so we began with a “get to know you” session designed to build rapport, explain the process and answer questions. We then used psychometrics to further understand where individual strengths and development areas could be. Following feedback, we engaged with line managers to supplement this data and agree development plans.

As this was both an individual and strategic project, we also produced a summary, anonymised report for the executive team highlighting bench strength and gaps.

The tools

We decided to use a combination of the Hogan suite of personality assessments and the Harthill Leadership Development Profile (vertical development tool) for this population as they were able to interrogate the areas most relevant to the evolution of the organisation.

Bringing it to life

We are continuing to support leaders via bespoke executive coaching to progress their development action plans and embed change across the organisation.
